I have never been sporty, I even hated PE at school. Three children and a full time job kept me very busy. However, as I got older my weight began to creep up. Once I retired I could no longer use the excuse of being too busy to exercise and there were so many things I wanted to do but I just wasn’t fit enough to manage. I was feeling really uncomfortable in my “fat” clothes and couldn’t bear the idea of buying yet another size up. I didn’t like to have my photo taken because I didn’t like how I looked and I was terrified of going into a gym with all the fit, slender young things and muscled blokes, who might embarrass and intimidate me.
So I started going to some of Bev’s classes at Writhlington. She made me feel really welcome and was always so helpful and encouraging, she managed to prove that exercising can be fun. She was and still is simply inspirational. Before I knew it I was doing several classes a week. I finally plucked up the courage and actually joined Writhlington Gym. This meant I could do as many classes as I wanted so I tried everything!
Since 2008 when I joined the gym I have done Aerobics, Step Aerobics, Zumba, Zumba Toning, Salsa, Bums and Tums, Body Toning, Bokwa, Yoga, Fitsteps and many others. Bev keeps up with all of the new ideas and has always kept things fresh so I don’t ever get bored. I feel much fitter now at 60 than I did when I was 40. I have had to buy new clothes but in a smaller size and I enjoyed every second of my recent trips firstly to New Zealand which involved lots of exploring and even a 7 hour, 19km hike up the sides of volcanoes. I have also been to Turkey where I went Scuba diving and snorkelling. Getting fitter was nothing like I feared it would be, I’ve made a lot of friends and can honestly say I have a huge amount of fun in Bev’s classes.
